Normal Street, Japan.

I lived in Osaka for 3 months in 2014. During that time I recorded the normal things that I saw on the streets, including vending machines, traffic cones, convenience store signs, rubbish bins and bicycles.

Of course, most of the things I drew are not normal outside of Japan.

This was an addictive project, and it was great hunting for things to draw.

I like showing these illustrations to my Japanese friends, because they instantly recognise things like the Kirin vending machine, but notice others for the first time. For instance, my girlfriend Noriko had never noticed the One Coin vending machine until I drew it, even though there were two on our street, and dozens nearby.

The illustration originals are watercolour and HB pencil at B4 size.
